For 27 years, my partner was told she would never drive by ‘professional’ driving instructors.
Let that sink in.
Twenty-seven years of trying. Of switching instructors. Of repeating the cycle of hope and disappointment. Even her own father and former father-in-law, a professional instructor himself, tried to help her, but still—no license.
It became a running theme in her life. And out of necessity, she adapted. She walked everywhere, and not just casually. She walked fast, purposefully, efficiently. Because she had to. Often with heavy shopping bags dangling from her arms and shoulders. It made her slim and strong.
But underneath that speed was something heavier: frustration. A quiet sense of defeat. No matter how independent she was, not having the freedom to drive was a lingering limitation. It impacted everything from errands to job opportunities.
Then we decided to change the script.
Belief Before the License
I had something she didn’t have all those years: belief. I didn’t see her as a permanent non-driver. I saw someone who had been let down by outdated methods and short-term thinking.
So I offered something different: love, time, patience, consistency, and my automatic car.
We didn’t treat it like formal lessons. We treated it like a journey to freedom. We drove together. Practiced calmly. Repeated scenarios until they felt natural. I coached her through anxiety. I focused on what she was doing right, not just what needed fixing.
Slowly, something shifted.
She became more confident. More fluid behind the wheel. She began to see herself not as someone trying to drive, but as a driver.
Test Day
She didn’t pass the first time.
But the second time? She nailed it. She said it was as if she had the angels and her ancestors travelling with her, willing her on to success.
It was a surreal, emotional moment. Not just because she had a license in hand, but because she had broken a cycle of doubt that lasted nearly three decades.
The system had failed her. But belief and persistence didn’t.
What This Taught Me
This experience wasn’t just a win for her. It was a reminder for me:
- Belief is a strategy. When someone truly believes in you, it creates momentum.
- Pacing matters. Rushing doesn’t build skill. Repetition and reassurance do.
- Frustration often hides ability. So many people have the capability—they just need the right environment.
Sometimes, the missing ingredient isn’t more instruction. It’s support.
Who Do You Believe In?
We all know someone who’s stuck. Who’s convinced they can’t do something because the past says otherwise. They’re walking fast through life, compensating for a belief they no longer have.
Maybe what they need isn’t another course, another coach, or another critique.
Maybe they just need someone who believes in them more than they believe in themselves.
My partner proved what’s possible when belief meets action.
She drives now. Confidently. Proudly. Free.
Know someone who needs a win?
Encourage them. Better yet, believe in them.
